PREVIEW: Benjamin Francis Leftwich, Manchester Academy 2, 23/2/12

Indie folk song-man Benjamin Francis Leftwich is set to perform at Manchester’s intimate Academy 2 later this week as part of his early 2012 tour. A firm favourite amongst fans, Leftwich has been bewitching audiences all across the UK with his gentle and tender tones since he burst onto the scene back in 2006. His heart-wrenching debut album Last Smoke Before The Snowstorm was met with open arms by fans and critics alike and it wasn’t long before the likes of Radio One, XFM and The Fly sat up and took notice. Perhaps his rootsy sound is best displayed in Pictures, the record’s haunting first single in which Benjamin crafts a stripped back, melancholic hymn thanks to some tender vocals and gentle guitar sting finger picking.

Those partial to gambling may want to put a quick quid or two on 2012 being the year of this young musicians career. He’s clearly started as he means to go on – with a string of UK dates taking him to some of the largest venues he’s ever played, including a stop at London’s iconic Shepherds Bush Empire. What’s more, fans who show their support this time around will be treated to an extra surprise as, for the first time ever, Benjamin is joined on stage by a full live band, adding a little extra body and warmth to his already welcoming sound. Full details of Benjamin’s UK tour can be found below along with the video for his beautifully sentimental new single Pictures.
