NEWS: tUnE-yArDs to play @ Deaf Institute on June 13th

32-Year-old Merril Garbus is the sole woman behind what is an extravagant name. tUnE yArDs looks innovative, if not a little whacky on paper and the same can pretty much be said for her sound. Those who managed to pick up a copy of her under-the-radar first record have been unable to stop talking about it since. Entitled BiRd-BrAiNs, the debut was made using simple free mixing software and a digital voice recorder to capture all sounds. The end result was an unforgetable mixture of lo-fi production, powerful yelping vocals, and drum distortion, all with the warmth provided by Garbus’ primary instrument, a Ukelele.

Live the intricate album was replicated with a number of loop pedals. Garbus would literally build the layers of each song one by one in front of the audience. Drums were also looped in the same way in what became a truly gripping live show, not least because you and the woman herself, never seemed completely sure if all the pedals would work in unison. Now tUnE yArDs are back on tour in support of second record, w h o k i l l, and are bringing a much larger supporting band too. What was already a great live show which garnered many fans is now a fantastic spectacle in it’s own right, just watch this recent SXSW performance! See you at the Deaf Institute…
