Quirky Nights out in Manchester

The Best: Places for a quirky night out in Manchester

Why not try a night out in Manchester that’s a little out of the ordinary?

It’s common knowledge that Manchester isn’t short of night out locations – but what if you’re looking for something a bit different? It might be time to find a new destination, and thankfully we know of a few. From arcade bars to axe throwing, there’s sure to be at least one destination on our list that will tickle your fancy.

NQ64

With two bars both located in the heart of Manchester – one in Deansgate and one in the Northern Quarter – NQ64 is definitely one for the gamers who fancy a drink or two. Filled with retro arcade games and pinball machines, this spot is one for all ages. Definitely a favourite with students, NQ64 is hard to miss with its bright neon spray painted walls. Fancy a cocktail? Behind the bar they serve a range of themed cocktails based on your favourite video games. ‘Pacs a punch’, ‘Donkey Kolada’, ‘Kirby” and ‘Power Star Martini’ are just a few on offer. When taking a break from gaming, there are also plenty of places to sit and have a catch up or a gossip. Head down to NQ64 to have a night of gaming for a change.

The Washhouse

We know what you’re thinking, what could possibly be fun about washing your clothes? Don’t worry, The Washhouse isn’t what it looks or sounds like. It’s actually one of Manchester’s hidden gems, located just across from the Arndale’s multi-story car park. Commonly discovered on TikTok, The Washhouse is a ‘secret’ cocktail bar that specialises in theatrical, weird and wonderful cocktails. The location itself is cleverly disguised as – you guessed it – a washhouse, with dulled windows and old washing machines littering its entrance. However when you step inside, that’s where the fun begins. To the left of the entrance there’s a phone that you must pick up, only then will someone come down to collect you through the secret entrance. This is a venue full of secrets and surprises, so don’t do any Googling before you go, as it might spoil the fun. Once in, you can enjoy a wild cocktail like no other, in a bar like no other.

Karen’s Diner

Just a quick heads up: this one is not for those that are easily offended or those that can’t take a joke. It’s far from your average diner visit. Karen’s Diner is an interactive dining experience where the aim is to make you feel as unwelcome as possible. Basically, it’s the only place where the service is terrible on purpose. The diner itself is new to Manchester, located about 10 minutes outside of the centre in Prestwich but the question is, could you handle the heat? As soon as you enter, you’re vulnerable to the restaurant’s moody staff members who aren’t shy about dishing out an insult or two. However if you want a good laugh and classic diner food, Karen’s Diner delivers on that promise. It’s sure to be a meal out experience that you’ll not forget in a hurry, which is why it is worthy of a place on our list.

Whistle Punks

Had a hard week at work? Broke up with an ex? Just lost your job? Or just need somewhere to release all of your built up stress? Whistle Punks axe throwing is the perfect place. If you don’t fancy the usual bars and clubs on Deansgate, why not try this one? It’s already one of the most popular places to visit in town and a night out that’s certainly out of the ordinary. No need to panic if you’re new to it, these axe throwing sessions are designed for first-timers. Think this might be the night out for you? Bring your friends and family as you can have up to 10 players per lane that includes two targets and an instructor (obviously). Piece of cake right? Well, if you’re good enough, staff will even teach you a few trick shots and how to throw two axes at once. So, if you’re up for a challenge, take a detour from your usual spots and visit Whistle Punks.

Junkyard Golf

With one in almost every UK city, Junkyard Golf is a must when visiting Manchester. Mini golf mixed with strong cocktails is a sure recipe for disaster – but also a lot of fun. If you love things loud and flashy, this place has you covered. Junkyard Golf contains flashing lights, UV lights, and loud music – imagine a club atmosphere, minus the sticky floor. With three crazy, interactive courses to choose from – Pablo, Bozo and Gary – you’ll be spoilt for choice. All three are equally weird and wonderful. There are even a few bars along the way to keep you cup filled. With themes including a twisted circus, a UV disco room, a tropical terror and a scrap metal junkyard, there’s certainly something for everyone. However, there are only nine holes on each course, so grab a group of your mates to make the fun last even longer. Don’t worry, there are also plenty of photo opportunities along the way for all you Insta addicts out there.
